Recently we had the chance to stay at Yass Caravan Park, not really by choice. We were more so diverted into town to find the nearest mechanic, after finding the Land Cruiser had spat 2 of the 3 fan belts. During drive into Yass we had all of our fingers and toes crossed, hoping that the other fan belt didn’t let go.
What a pleasant surprise this town and this caravan park was!
Yass is a small town located about 60kms from Canberra or 280kms from Sydney on the Hume Highway. It was even home to one of Australia’s best known poets, Banjo Patterson. Yass has a rich colonial history and was home to numerous flour mills in the area. It is a great place to base yourself for a few days and check out the history of the town.
The caravan park is only a small park, however it has almost all the you could want in a park. It has clean amenities, good size sites and also a little playground for the kids.
For the novice caravanner like myself who isn’t the greatest at reversing. This park is a godsend with it’s drive through sites.
The amenities are clean and well presented, the gents has 3 showers with great water pressure and the water was nice and hot. Very grateful about this considering we stayed here in the middle of winter.
The Laundry was also well kept and we gave it a good workout during our stay to catch up on the amount of washing that had somehow managed to grow into a mountain over a few days.
For those who choose to brave the cold and cook outside, there is a well kept little camp kitchen in the park with an electric BBQ and provision to wash your dishes etc.
To keep the rug rats busy, there is a small play equipment area also in the park, it was great to see the kids burning some energy, as they had been stuck in the car for most of the day.
The caravan park is small but well maintained. Watch the entrance as you come into or go out of the park, as it can catch the unaware and you may find your vehicle dragging its bum as you exit/enter.
The one downside to the park that I found was the there was no dump point. I have heard that this will be rectified in the future. If you need to use a dump point there is one about 1klm from the park heading back out toward the Hume Highway, on the side of the road, it is well sign posted.
The town boasts numerous signs to tell you that it is an RV friendly town. We found it to be a great little find and another town that is still going strong, even though it is only a name on a sign, on the road to Gundagai.
