4×4 Destinations Review – Hat Head Holiday Park
“It is a perfect destination for the surfer, fisherman, 4×4 enthusiast, camper, bushwalker, and so many more.”
Recently we went to this spot that I have been to numerous times before, for the simple reason, it’s spectacular!!!
Hat Head is approx 30 minutes South of South West Rocks and about the same to Kempsey. Once in Hat Head, you will be surprised by how the town has kept it’s charm and has not been comercialised like many other towns on the Eastern Coast.
You will notice that there are two shops in Hat Head, the first you will see is a takeaway and general store, and the next is a takeaway/servo/bottlo etc. Both stores are well equipped with whatever you might need and both serve great food.
As you keep driving, just before you get to the Hat Head Holiday Park, you will notice the Hat Head Bowling Club on your left. This is a great little club, which has a restaurant inside serving nice food. We did think the prices were a little high, however it is worth it.
The Hat head Holiday Park itself has a mixture of powered/non-powered sites and also cabins available. Either way you are only a short stroll from the beach or the inlet. The road itself that goes through the park is a public road, so be aware of this.
This is a great location to take your bike, as there is not a lot of traffic and the kids can generally look after themselves. We actually rode around the whole area and next to the inlet there is a nice little bike/walking track. Next to the bowling club there is a great little kids play area, with swings and slides etc which mostly is undercover.
There are three amenities blocks in the park, one which is a public block and does not have showers etc. The one next to the main office is the pick of the bunch as it has recently been upgraded. The amenities block that is on the hill is older but still does the job. We did notice that due to the amenities block being on part of the public road, it is often used by the ‘locals’ to have a shower etc. There are locks on the doors, but generally the door is ajar and the facilities can be accessed unless the door physically closed by the previous person. There are various signs on the facilities reminding people to close the door to prevent this. There are also various signs through out the park to warn you to lock your valuables up. As it is a public road, access cannot be restricted. We made sure that we locked bikes etc up at night and never had any dramas.
As for the beach, it is patrolled in peak season and is a calm beach and great for the kids. The inlet is the best place to swim but if you have kids, be aware that on an outgoing tide the current can be quite strong. This also can be quite relaxing for the adults as you can walk down stream a bit and float all the way to the head. Very relaxing indeed. On the outgoing tide you will notice that the water changes from crystal clear blue water to a red/brown colour. This is due to the tea tree etc. But nothing to worry about in my opinion.
For the fisherman, perfect!!! Due to the incoming/outgoing tide, there are plenty of fish in the inlet and even if some are small. Lots of fun can be had!
All sorts of water sports can be done, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, Li-loing, maybe swim against the outgoing/incoming tide for a great workout. I was told by a regular camper that the surfing is great too.
If your not into caravan parks, you can camp at the Smokey Cape campground which is about 10mins from Hat Head itself but has no facilities other than long drop toilets. Camping fees apply.
You can also 4×4 on the beach, but a permit must be purchased before hand.
Don’t forget to check out the little seafood store in Hat Head too, we had some nice local prawns when we were there.
If you are after a tourist mecca, with shopping centers etc, then this is not the place for you. For some people it may be considered boring. But if you are after a place to get away from the hustle and have a relaxing time. Then this place ticks all the boxes.
